Samuel Virgo's new music is an example of the ongoing journey of making something your own.
The Sheffield-born, London-based musician has released a new single that has a little something for everyone. Influences of Virgo include artists like Fontaines D.C., The 1975, Tyler The Creator, and Twenty One Pilots. Virgo has returned to releasing music as truly his own, leaving his mark on the entire process. His previous work was under the name Svirgo19, and this chapter is more personal; it holds work that reflects not only the artist, but the person behind the creation.
Virgo’s new single, “Slip Away”, is a love song that offers an alternative twist. The feelings are rooted in losing yourself as you navigate the journey of moving in and out of love. It’s a love song at its core, but like the feelings themselves, at times, could be subjective. The sound, along with the meaning, could be left up to interpretation by the listeners, and he invites that. “I wanted it to feel intimate with the vocals, guitars, and understated production. It’s one of the most vulnerable moments on the project overall,” explains Virgo.
The intimate project follows the release of “ICU,” which is an example of what else fans can hear on his upcoming EP. Beyond the emotional and intimate look, themes may also include looking at the truths that are often hidden, darker, and hold a distorted narrative that creates and shapes a much larger story. Reflecting personal experiences, identity, relationships, and growing up, each song will offer something a little different and show how Virgo approaches songwriting. That could be the common thread throughout his musical journey.
Not only is the music personal, but the work is too. Virgo poured himself into the entire project, writing, producing, and engineering it all. His live performances have helped to build a reputation as he continues to evolve as a performer. He has headlined shows at The Finsbury and Temple of Art and Music, and has appeared at Colours Hoxton, Camden Assembly, Notting Hill Arts Club, Next Door Records, The Fiddler's Elbow, Off The Cuff, Made Festival, The Alternative Escape Festival and BARE in Norway. Support for his work has been seen in BBC Introducing Sheffield, COLORSxSTUDIO, Glide Magazine, DMY and Ones To Watch, while he also contributed to the soundtrack for the BBC Three series Boarders. Virgo’s newest and perhaps most vulnerable single, “Slip Away”, is another step towards larger, exciting projects.
