Five Artists Lou Thinks You Should Know: Vol 2

Words: Sarah Currier

Wunderhorse

Few bands can tell a story like Wunderhorse. The group’s frontman, Jacob Slater, has an exceptional songwriting ability, with lyrics that focus on themes of troubled childhoods, addiction, and the ugly emotions that make us human. His unflinching but compassionate lyrics, coupled with distinct guitar hooks that instantly grab your attention, make Wunderhorse one of the best alt-rock acts in the UK right now.

Searows

Hot girl summer has come to a close, which means you need the perfect soundtrack for sad boy autumn. Look no further than Searows, whose atmospheric and deeply intimate music feels like the embodiment of the Pacific Northwest. Reminiscent of other bedroom pop artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Lizzy McAlpine, Searows is a must-listen for anyone trying to embrace the autumn gloom.

Bikini Kill

Formed in the 1990s, Bikini Kill made a name for themselves as an unapologetically feminist band in Washington’s underground punk scene, which was an aggressively male-dominated environment. Their lyrics attack misogyny head-on, calling out rape culture and embracing female empowerment and connection. They aren’t just the quintessential riot grrrl band – we have them to thank for the entire genre.

Post Animal

With their dreamy, prog-rock-inspired style of music, Post Animal sounds like they stepped out of another era. All six band members contribute lyrically and vocally, and three of them have their own solo careers, most notably Joe Keery/Djo. In their latest genre-bending album, “Iron,” that collaboration is on full display, highlighting the band’s willingness to experiment and try new things.

Gurriers

Gurriers are one of the standout bands contributing to the exhilarating post-punk revival happening in Ireland right now. They’re moody, nihilistic, and they don’t hold anything back. Their new record, “Nobody’s Coming To Save You,” encapsulates everything that makes the band special – gritty, driving guitar riffs, relentless drums, and raw, frenzied vocals that make you want to mosh, regardless of where you are.
