Single ReleasE: Oxygen “Without a Trace”

A debut single says a lot about an artist, and “Without a Trace” is a great indicator of what listeners can expect from Oxygen in the future. The single starts with a hazy guitar before it ramps up into its full form. As the rock instrumental takes the foreground, the bass, drums, guitar, and vocal line compete for the listener’s attention.
Oxygen informed us that “Without a Trace” was written during a period of conflict and instability within the band. They started collaborating with two new members, and hadn’t yet found a working relationship that benefited everybody. While this is certainly present in the listening experience, it does not detract from it. In fact, it adds to it. The song provides a catharsis for the listener that you could otherwise find only in a fistfight or a shouting match. Of course, the listener can have this emotional release from the comfort of their own couch.
The lyrics of the song are intentionally vague as to not draw focus from the song’s strong musicality. The shadows are the song’s repeated symbol. The relationship to the shadows changes constantly from dancing with them, to asking them questions, and finally, shining a light into them to discover the truth. Another beautifully tragic image comes in the song’s bridge, which depicts the narrator’s wish to be dropped from somewhere high and fall into the abyss. Jack Woolston’s vocals are particularly haunting at this moment. In the future, it would be interesting to see Oxygen challenge themselves to write more focused lyrical images to support their already stunning musicality.

Oxygen is made up of 5 members: Jack Woolston, Jacob Owens, Luca George, Todd Jones, and Archie Waugh. If you are a fan of the alt-rock wave coming out of the U.K., Oxygen is worth keeping an eye out for.
