Single Release: Dolours “I am the dog”

The language of desire is universal; to create, to know, to be. In breaking away from the normalcy of being by and wholly yourself, it is truly punk in nature, letting you surrender to things you never thought possible.
Dolours – a fourpiece UK Post Punk band from The Black Country – has their hand on the mechanical pulse of just that, the punk of it all. In tackling the genre, they explore the complexity of relationships, and just what it means to lose yourself in one.

Coming straight off of their latest single “Blunts”, “I AM THE DOG” serves as a striking and powerful break away from their previous release. Danny Owen (the frontman), in raving about the making of the song, talks about how they wrote it in one afternoon at their producer’s house.
Composed from a natural ‘coming together’ of lyrics and music, the D.I.Y. of it all is revealed in every note.
Technically perfect, but inherently simple, the drumline throughout keeps as a constant reminder of what once was. Evoking the true power of producing, and creating a song that encapsulates the sentiment of a rough relationship, Dolours tackles this with ‘unflinching honesty’.
Described as, “the erosion of identity under someone else’s influence,” it explores how desire can “warp a person until they accept a version of themselves they never chose” (Dolours). The lyrics showcase this perfectly, “I am the bitch/I am the dog/I am the face of the one you love.” I am below you, I am separate from you, I am with you.
The deep electronic undertone traps us in a feeling of being stuck, confined in a room of our own making and desires. The perpetual motion of it keeps us moving in a circle, round and round, for as long as it takes for us to stop it (approximately two minutes and thirteen seconds).
To find and lose yourself to the flow of an unrelenting feeling is a notion that Dolours strives to capture in every release. And, in “I AM THE DOG”, they do it with the drop of every beat.
