Rachel Bochner is modern pop done right. Her debut album, Guess a Sure Thing Couldn’t Go Down Gently, released this September 25th. The title is a mouthful, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the concise lyricism present on these tracks.

Bochner has cultivated a reputation for delivering devastating lyrics over mid-tempo beats. When she posted about the album release on Instagram, one fan commented, “currently listening mouth agape btw.” Bochner does not rely on trauma dumping or shocking revelations to create interesting images. She beautifully strikes the balance between vulnerability and restraint. The pre-chorus of the opening track, titled “How Was I Supposed to Know?” repeats the phrase “I thought I thought I thought it through/I thought I thought it through” which is both a catchy and insightful hook.
Standout tracks on the album include “Furniture,” “Stupid!!!,” “Happier You’re Gone (SASE)” and “Fault Line.” The production of “Stupid!!!” is particularly memorable due to its upbeat pop/rock instrumental.
With over 90k monthly listeners on Spotify, Bochner is far from undiscovered, but she’s also far from a household name. She is about to embark on her “Sorry if it’s Selfish” Tour this fall which will stop in major cities across the United States. The tickets are averaged at about $23, and Lou believes that is a bargain price for the quality of Bochner’s work.
