Single ReleasE: John Oates “Goodnight or Goodbye”

Release Date August 28, 2026
SarAH Walsh

John Oates has definitely still got it. “Goodnight or Goodbye” is the latest entry in Oates’s vast catalog of soulful melodies, and it is, without a doubt,  a certified hit. It is released to all streaming platforms Friday, August 28th, 2026.

Oates reconnected with “Goodnight or Goodbye” after finding it on a tape from 1992 and deciding it deserved a proper re-record. As soon as the lyrics begin, you can tell that this song came from a time of innocence in Oates’ life. The story tackles the ups and downs of a tumultuous young relationship. The narrator often questions, “Is this Goodnight or Goodbye?” which is the song’s namesake. He questions over and over again until he makes a definitive decision: “This ain’t goodnight, it’s goodbye.”

The song opens with a plucky synth and voice that ominously remarks “we can’t go back this far.” This statement is aptly followed by a soulful beat drop and doo-wop backing vocals reminiscent of The Four Seasons and The Drifters. The rich background vocals, which Oates performed himself,  are the true standout of the record. The mix between Oates’s lead vocal and the harmonies is expertly done. The listener can easily tell that Oates has a reverence and love for this era of music.

John Oates is best known for his prolific work in the duo Hall & Oates; although, he has also cultivated a very impressive solo career. He is already a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and has 10 No. 1 records under his belt.  Throughout 2026, he has been on the intimate An Evening of Songs and Stories tour and will continue touring for the rest of the year.

You can find tour dates on his website JohnOates.com.

“Goodnight or Goodbye” is streaming now across all platforms.
