Ex:Re is Back as Elena Tonra Pre-Releases "Sleep" From Her Upcoming Second Album Save As

Elena Tonra (of beloved London indie-folk band Daughter) is back with a new single for her alt-pop project Ex:Re (pronounced ex-ray.) Her new album Save As is set to release on October 30, with the latest single “Sleep” joining previously released “Radio Station” on the nine-track project. She said she never planned on releasing a second album under Ex:Re, her self-titled album having been released almost ten years ago in 2018. She’s been working on Save As with producer Fabian Prynn since 2023, picking up sketches of songs she’d had for several years.
“Sleep” is a track that seems to flow in and out of consciousness, imitating what it’s like to drift off into a dream state late at night. Tonra wrote the song alone in a hotel room in Paris, creating the melodic loop on the track from her acoustic guitar. Alongside the single, a live session video was released on October 6. The vibe of the song evokes the feelings of late nights in a city drifting off to sleep, smoking a cigarette on the balcony of the apartment where the afters is being hosted. The track is dreamy, haunting, romantic, and a perfect alt-pop almost prequel to another late night track from her first album “5AM.”
“Radio Station” has a different vibe and will serve as the perfect opening track for her album. Released with an official music video directed by Angela Ricciardi in Paris, the track describes an endless California road trip as a metaphor for the inner workings of Tonra’s mind. Tonally, it is reminiscent of “I Can’t Keep You” from her first album.

When reflecting on what drives her to writing, Tonra admits “My memory is not always good” and that documenting moments, thoughts, and travel locations allows her to “travel back in time” during performances. The human mind is fascinating in that we can be over-thinking things so much one day and then months later forget that it was ever something we thought twice about. Tonra’s music as Ex:Re allows us to unplug for a few moments, fall into the trippy repetitive sounds of percussion and truly reflect.
Ex:Re kicks off her sold out live in-store shows on October 30 in London, where she will perform to intimate crowds at six stores. Fans at these shows will be the first to hear these songs live and have a unique experience with the artist. Save As is available for pre-save and pre-order now.
